“A single line positioned across a beautiful space is a landscape,
vast, empty and mine”.
Primary installation 210 x 180 cm, The Absent Mother, (Quilted brain form composed of human hair, pigmented powders and Japanese glass beads) 2002.
My mother has manifestly become the principal element underpinning every artefact that embodies my practice which now belongs to a broader concern, that of ‘Mothering’. The idea of a mother ‘absent’ is and continues to be a challenging statement. What constitutes absence?
The Absent Mother installation attempts to evoke reflections on these concerns.
The quilted form conveys the initial reconstruction of the memory of the ‘absent’ mother as is manifest, whilst the development of the individual is defined through a series of drawings, layered with symbols that bring into play an imagined landscape of uncertainty and isolation.
